ABOUT VETCONEKT
As animal healthcare providers, we have witnessed the pervasive challenges to animal welfare faced by animals in Uganda. These issues extend far beyond mere concerns such as poor nutritional care and harsh handling by caretakers. Our observations have unveiled a spectrum of challenges, ranging from insufficient farm infrastructure supporting the welfare needs of animals to alarming transportation practices. Examples include shoats, pigs, and dogs precariously tied onto motorcycle carriers, and cattle with tails winched onto truck rails during long-distance transport exceeding 200 km. Additionally, we have noted widespread poisoning of free-roaming dogs as a control measure, and the excessive and improper use of drugs, particularly in poultry.
Compounding these challenges, we have encountered instances of unqualified personnel posing as veterinarians, administering inappropriate treatments and surgeries that cause harm to the animals. The root causes of these issues have been identified as insufficient awareness, lack of proper training, inadequate policies, and lax enforcement of existing regulations. Recognizing the urgency to address these concerns comprehensively, Vetconekt was established in 2019.
Initially conceived as an initiative, Vetconekt has evolved into a fully-fledged Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in 2023, dedicated to advocating for animal welfare. Our mission encompasses providing essential training, conducting impactful research, and actively engaging in advocacy to influence policies that can substantially improve animal welfare. This commitment extends not only to Uganda but also beyond national borders. Vetconekt is devoted to creating a positive and lasting impact on the lives of animals by addressing the root causes of their welfare-related challenges and promoting a culture of compassionate and responsible care for animals.
